Debra is the chair of the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Science and also serves as the Bastyr University Dietetic Internship director.

Debra’s career as a registered dietitian and nutrition educator has spanned community health, contract food service and clinical nutrition. She has worked with children and families, with elders and retirement communities, and has provided nutrition services to detention facilities, schools and recovery programs. She has consulted in private practice, and has served as a regional manager supervising twenty five dietitians across five states. Having been advised by a mentor professor to first gain practice in the nutrition field before pursuing a teaching career in order to be a more effective clinical teacher, Debra proudly brings a breadth of experiences to her academic career.
Debra previously taught Nutrition Assessment and Therapy I and II and Nutrition and Aging. She continues to teach the seminar classes held for the dietetic interns.
Debra has strong interests in the relationship between food, lifestyle and health. She enjoys gardening, cooking, and sharing good food with others.
Debra believes in a whole foods approach to nutrition. Her teaching philosophy focuses on creating a learning environment in which students are enthusiastically supported to reach their fullest potential. Her mission is to support the development of extraordinary nutrition and exercise science professionals.
