Extraordinary Training For Leaders

If you dream of serving women and families, Simkin Center delivers knowledge, tools and skills you can immediately use in your community. More than 8500 students have met their educational goals here, and have gone on to become leaders in their professions.

Anti-Racist Goal

Simkin Center strives to provide a learning environment free from institutionalized racism and oppression, and is dedicated to health and race equity and cultural awareness in supporting maternal, infant and family health. The Simkin Center Leadership Fund offers merit scholarship with the intent to increase the number of birth professionals who come from and work in low income, ethnic, cultural, geographic and communities of color which are underserved.

A Legacy of Humanizing Childbirth

Founded in 1988 as a program of the Seattle Midwifery School, early graduates of the Birth Doula Workshop founded PALS Doulas, one of the first birth doula professional associations providing peer support, continuing education, birth doula certification and referrals. Using PALS Doulas' organizational model, doulas and advocates joined to found DONA International, now the largest doula association in North America. Simkin Center is the first organization to be granted DONA International approval for curriculum and faculty. Graduates also founded Open Arms Perinatal Services, an innovative non-profit providing community-based doula services. Seattle Midwifery School merged with Bastyr University in 2009.
